HOW TO WRITE YOUR FIRST NOVEL

Part two of my monthly Writing Magazine feature, How to Write Your First Novel is now online.

LOVE STORY OF THE YEAR!

My latest novel THE WEDDING PARTY has just been shortisted for LOVE STORY OF THE YEAR, an award presented annually by THE ROMANTIC NOVELISTS' ASSOCIATION (members include Joanna Trollope and Katie Fforde).  My novel is about a middle aged couple who get married, much to the disapproval of friends and family. It is told through the eyes of four people who are going to the wedding in nine months time - if indeed, it ever takes place! The winner will be announced in the middle of March.

Student thanks Sophie

Aspiring writer Sophie Banks has recently won first prize in a short story competition in February's issue of Writers' Forum.
She sent me the following email:

" This is just to let you know that I have won first prize in Feb's Writers' Forum fiction competition with a short story. Despite all my post-course resolutions to write regularly, it's the only other story I have sent to anyone since I had one published in Best magazine (at the time when you were coming to my house in St Albans to do the creative writing course) so I am really chuffed and newly inspired!

In the little bit about me that they put alongside my story in the magazine it says I was inspired by a talk by an author in a bookshop (which was you) and I just thought you might be interested to know that your teaching had an impact!"

Do you love romance? Do you adore romantic short stories?

Then look out for the new Loves me, loves me not - a heart-tugging, spelling-binding collection of short stories by top writers such as Joanna Trollope and Katie Fforde. I also have a short story in it called Word Wise (look for Sophie King in the index). Loves me, loves me not would make a great Christmas present and is already heading its way up the book charts as a best-seller. It is published by Mira and available at all bookshops.

Looking for a Christmas present?

Buy my new short story collection, Just One More Coffee?, on CD, Listen to a story online and get details of how to buy the CD.

I visited the Oxfam bookshop in St Albans as part of a nationwide initiative by authors to promote books in charity shops. I was interviewed by writer Steven Barley while signing books. Read the interview (opens PDF in new window).
